Experienced Electricians: A Route to the JIB Gold Card Through the Experienced Worker Assessment
If you have built your career as an electrician through years of practical industry experience but have not yet achieved your JIB ECS Gold Card, the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) could provide the route you are looking for.
At OPTIMA we understand that many highly experienced electricians entered the industry through different routes and may not hold the full suite of qualifications now commonly expected.
Our team can review your existing qualifications, industry experience and current role to help determine whether the Experienced Worker pathway is suitable for you.
Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA)
The Experienced Worker Assessment is designed for experienced installation electricians who can demonstrate substantial occupational competence gained through working in the electrical industry.
The pathway may be suitable if you:
Have a minimum of 5 years' industry experience
Hold a Level 2 or Level 3 electrical qualification
Hold the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, or intend to complete it
Hold the City & Guilds 2391-50 Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations, or intend to complete it
The assessment route allows experienced electricians to demonstrate their existing knowledge, skills and workplace competence while working towards the qualifications required for progression towards JIB ECS Gold Card status.
More Than 10 Years' Experience but No Level 2 or Level 3 Qualification?
For electricians with extensive practical experience but without the Level 2 or Level 3 qualification normally required for entry, an alternative route may be available.
If you have more than 10 years' experience working as an installation electrician, you may be eligible to complete our 10-Year+ Entry Test.
Successful completion of the entry assessment may allow you to progress onto the Experienced Worker Assessment pathway without first completing the standard Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.

Registration Fee: £199.95 + VAT
This provides experienced electricians with an opportunity to demonstrate that their existing industry knowledge is sufficient to progress onto the assessment pathway.
Not Sure Whether You Are Eligible?
Every electrician's experience is different, which is why eligibility should be reviewed individually.
Our training team can look at:
Your existing electrical qualifications
Length of industry experience
Current electrical role
Type of installation work undertaken
Inspection and testing experience
18th Edition qualification
Evidence of workplace competence
From there, we can advise whether the Experienced Worker Assessment is suitable and explain the next steps.
Flexible Payment Options
Eligible candidates can spread the cost of their training and assessment through interest-free monthly payment plans.
Payment options are available over 11 months, from just £136 + VAT per month.
This can make progressing towards your qualification more manageable while continuing to work within the industry.
Turn Your Experience Into Recognised Qualifications
For many experienced electricians, the challenge is not gaining practical experience — it is having that experience formally recognised.
The Experienced Worker Assessment provides an opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced electricians to demonstrate their occupational competence and work towards recognised industry qualifications and JIB ECS Gold Card status.
If you have spent years working within the electrical industry and are unsure whether you meet the entry requirements, speak to our team.
We can review your existing qualifications and experience and advise you on the most appropriate route.
