The Experienced Worker qualification suitable for both self-employed and employed electricians who have worked for several years but have never gained full, formal recognition of their skills or experience. You will need to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and competence to the standard of the Level 3 Electrotechnical apprenticeship.

This qualification is not a technical certificate which you spend most of your time in a classroom or workshop, but rather a qualification that is completed in a place of work. To be able to complete this qualification you must be able to evidence your electrotechnical competency by completing electrical installations on site and then have your work assessed by one of our Assessors.

Why do you need the Level 3 NVQ qualification?

It allows for Electrical Improvers and Experienced Workers to progress in their career as a qualified Electrician and onto the AM2 Assessment:

Upon completion of the AM2, Electrical Improvers and Experienced Workers can do the following:

• Obtain the status of “Electrician” with the JIB. If you wish to join them or work for an Electrical Contracting firm that is a member of the JIB.

• Obtain a JIB Gold ECS card.

• Become a Part P registered “Approved Electrician” with one of the Part P scheme providers such as NICEIC, Elecsa or NAPIT.

What does the City & Guilds 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment consist of?

The City & Guilds 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is designed for experienced electricians who already have substantial occupational experience and need to demonstrate their competence against the current industry standard.

Unlike a traditional classroom-based qualification, the EWA is predominantly assessed through evidence of the electrical work you are already carrying out in the workplace.

Under TESP requirements, the 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment must be completed within a maximum of 18 months. The actual time taken will depend on how quickly you can provide suitable workplace evidence and complete the required assessment activities.

The programme typically includes:

• Initial Skills Scan and eligibility review – your existing qualifications and occupational experience are reviewed before you begin.

• Portfolio development and assessor support – your assessor will guide you through the evidence required and support you in building your portfolio.

• Workplace evidence – you will submit evidence from genuine electrical installation work to demonstrate occupational competence.

• On-site assessments – your assessor will carry out workplace observations to verify your practical skills and competence.

• Professional discussions and assessment activities – these may be used alongside your portfolio evidence to meet the qualification requirements.

• AM2E gateway – the Experienced Worker Qualification and gateway application for the AM2E must be completed within the applicable 18-month EWA timeframe.

• AM2E assessment – once you have successfully progressed through the gateway, you will complete the AM2E at an approved NET AM2 centre.

The AM2E assessment fee is not included as standard, although it can be included within selected OPTIMA programme packages.

To enrol onto the 2346 EWA, you must meet the relevant experience and eligibility requirements. The programme is intended for experienced workers and is not a fast-track route for new entrants to the electrical industry.
