C&G 2365 Diploma in Electrical Installation: Is it Right for You?
If you’re considering a career as an electrician but aren’t currently working in the electrical industry, the City & Guilds 2365 Diploma in Electrical Installation is one of the main training routes available.
Unlike an apprenticeship, you don’t need to already have an electrical employer before you begin. This makes the C&G 2365 particularly suitable for adult career changers who want to develop their electrical knowledge and practical skills before progressing into employment and workplace-based training.
But what does the qualification cover, and where does it fit on the pathway towards becoming a fully qualified electrician?
What is the C&G 2365 Diploma?
The C&G 2365 is an industry-recognised electrical installation qualification covering the technical knowledge and practical skills required to begin building a career in the electrical industry.
The qualification is split into two main stages: C&G 2365-02 Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations and C&G 2365-03 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations.
For somebody starting without previous electrical qualifications, Level 2 is normally the first step.
At Optima, the Level 2 programme combines electrical theory with practical workshop training. Topics include health and safety, electrical science, electrical installation technology, wiring systems and enclosures, and communication within building services engineering.
Practical training includes working with wiring systems, lighting and power circuits, PVC and steel containment, cable tray and steel wire armoured cable, alongside safe isolation and basic inspection and testing.
Progressing to the C&G 2365 Level 3
Once you have established the fundamentals at Level 2, the C&G 2365-03 Level 3 Diploma takes your technical knowledge further.
The course covers more advanced areas including electrical installation design, inspection and testing, fault diagnosis and rectification, electrical science and environmental technology systems.
This progression is important. While Level 2 provides the foundations, Level 3 develops the deeper technical understanding needed as you move towards more advanced training and workplace competence.

Does the C&G 2365 make you a qualified electrician?
This is an important distinction.
Completing the C&G 2365 Levels 2 and 3 gives you valuable technical qualifications, but it does not, by itself, make you a fully qualified electrician.
Classroom and workshop training can teach you the knowledge and practical principles of electrical installation, but becoming fully qualified also requires you to demonstrate competence in a real working environment.
Following the Level 3 Diploma, learners can progress towards the Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation, building evidence of the work they carry out on site. The pathway also includes the AM2 assessment before progressing to ECS Gold Card status.
Put simply, the C&G 2365 gives you the technical foundation; workplace experience and the NVQ allow you to demonstrate that you can apply that knowledge competently on site.
When should you start looking for electrical work?
You don’t necessarily need to wait until you have completed all your classroom qualifications before beginning your job search.
After gaining some initial training, many learners begin looking for entry-level opportunities such as Electrical Labourer, Electrician’s Mate or trainee roles, where appropriate and under suitable supervision.
Gaining site experience can help you put your training into context, develop practical confidence and begin building relationships within the industry. Later, once you progress onto your NVQ, suitable employment becomes essential because you need to generate workplace evidence.

Flexible training for adult career changers
For many adults, leaving employment to return to college full-time simply isn’t practical.

Learners can take the diplomas individually or as part of a wider training pathway. Optima’s Fast Track programme combines the C&G 2365 Levels 2 and 3 with the BS 7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification, while the full Gold Card programme takes learners further through the qualifications and assessments required on the journey towards Gold Card status.
