BS 7671 Amendment 4 (2026): NICEIC Releases Guidance as Industry Prepares for Changes

NICEIC has released a comprehensive package of guidance and training resources following the publication of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, signalling an important shift for electricians and contractors across the UK.

The amendment, published by Institution of Engineering and Technology and British Standards Institution, is available for immediate adoption. The current version of the wiring regulations will be formally withdrawn on 15 October 2026, giving contractors a defined window to update their knowledge and ensure compliance.

What Does Amendment 4 Mean for Electricians?

Amendment 4 reflects the ongoing evolution of the electrical industry, particularly around:

  • renewable energy integration (solar PV, battery storage, EV infrastructure)

  • increased complexity in installations

  • alignment with modern safety standards and best practice

For working electricians, this is not just a routine update, it’s a competency requirement. Staying current with BS 7671 is essential for compliance, certification, and ongoing work within the industry.

NICEIC Support Package: What’s Available?

To support contractors through the transition, NICEIC has introduced a structured range of resources designed to make the changes clear and actionable.

Key support includes:

  • 48-page Amendment 4 workbook
Available via the NICEIC customer portal, breaking down the updates in a practical format

  • ‘The Wire’ CPD-accredited webinar series
Covering the amendment in detail, with sessions available live and on demand

  • In-person technical events (2026)

  • Surrey – June

  • Sheffield – September

Alongside this, contractors can access updated technical guides, revised certification forms, and direct support via the NICEIC technical helpline.

Industry Direction: Why This Update Matters

Paul Collins, Technical Director at NICEIC, highlighted that Amendment 4 reflects the pace of change within the industry—particularly the integration of new technologies and the increasing demands placed on electrical installations.

In practical terms, this means electricians must ensure their knowledge is fully aligned with the latest regulations, not only to remain compliant but to maintain credibility and employability.

The Deadline Is Set: October 2026

While Amendment 4 can be adopted immediately, the key date to work towards is:

15 October 2026 – withdrawal of the previous BS 7671 version

Leaving updates until the last minute can create unnecessary pressure, particularly around exam availability, training demand, and certification timelines.

How to Stay Compliant: Training Matters

For many electricians, the most effective way to stay up to date is through structured training.

Our courses are designed to ensure you don’t just understand the regulations, you can apply them confidently on site and in assessment.

Don’t Leave It Too Late

With regulatory changes, demand for training always increases as deadlines approach. Securing your place early ensures:

  • access to preferred dates and formats (weekend, weekday, evening)

  • time to properly understand and apply the changes

  • a smoother transition before the October 2026 deadline
