SMMT Test Day 2025: EV Innovation, Industry Insight, and the Road Ahead

Electric vehicles take centre stage at the UK’s premier automotive media event – and the demand for skilled EV charging installers is rising fast

The 2025 SMMT Test Day, held on 15 May at the Millbrook Proving Ground, brought together more than 300 journalists and content creators to test drive over 169 vehicles from 35 leading brands. Organised by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), this exclusive event offered a hands-on look at the most exciting vehicles on the market – from classic nameplates to cutting-edge electric vehicles (EVs).

With EVs more advanced than ever, the message from Millbrook was clear: the future of the automotive industry is electric. And as that future unfolds, the UK’s need for qualified EV charging point installers is growing rapidly.

A Showcase of Innovation: From Cybersters to Classics

Attendees had access to Millbrook’s famous test tracks – including the high-speed bowl, hill route, city course, and off-road course – putting vehicles through their paces in real-world conditions. Star attractions included the MG Cyberster, the all-new Hyundai Inster, and even a nostalgic appearance from a classic Skoda Felicia.

In his coverage, Shahzad Sheikh, aka the Brown Car Guy, called the event "the Glastonbury of car journalism", praising the diverse lineup and immersive format. “It’s a truly unique opportunity to test new cars in ideal conditions and speak directly with manufacturers,” he said. (BrownCarGuy.com)

EVs: The Future Is Now

Over half the vehicles at this year’s event were either plug-in hybrids or fully electric models – reflecting the market’s rapid shift toward electrification. The UK now offers over 90 plug-in hybrid and around 80 fully electric models, with an average new EV offering a battery range close to 300 miles.

In a detailed review of the Hyundai Inster, Sheikh described it as “smartly designed, practical and competitively priced – the kind of EV that makes electric driving accessible to more people.” (Hyundai Inster Review)

The verdict across the board was clear: EVs are no longer just the future – they are the present.

Why EV Charging Installers Are More Essential Than Ever

As the EV revolution gathers pace, the infrastructure must keep up. That means more charging points, smarter installs, and qualified professionals to deliver them.

The government and private sector are investing heavily in charging networks, but the success of this expansion relies on one critical factor: skilled installers. Every EV on the road needs safe, reliable access to charging – whether it’s a home unit, a workplace solution, or a rapid charger on a motorway.

This demand is already driving huge growth in the sector, and those with the right qualifications will be at the forefront of the green energy workforce.
