Musk's Tesla applies to supply power to British homes
Elon Musk's Tesla has applied to the UK's energy regulator, Ofgem, for a licence to supply electricity to homes and businesses across England, Scotland, and Wales. If approved, Tesla Electric could begin operations as early as 2026, competing with established providers like British Gas and Octopus Energy.
Tesla's application, filed by Tesla Energy Ventures and signed by Andrew Payne, head of European energy operations, marks a significant expansion beyond its current role as an electricity generator in the UK. The company has been involved in the UK energy sector since 2020 and operates a similar model in Texas, where it offers competitive charging rates and a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program that compensates Powerwall users for supplying stored electricity back to the grid. Leveraging Existing Infrastructure
With over 250,000 electric vehicles and tens of thousands of Powerwall home storage batteries sold in the UK, Tesla has a substantial customer base to support its energy supply business. The company's existing infrastructure could facilitate the integration of electric vehicles and home battery systems into the national grid, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability. Potential Challenges and Market Dynamics
Tesla's application coincides with a decline in its vehicle sales across Europe. In July 2025, UK registrations of Teslas fell by nearly 60% compared to the same month in 2024. This downturn reflects increased competition from rival electric vehicle manufacturers, particularly China's BYD.
Additionally, Tesla's application is limited to electricity supply, excluding gas services. Therefore, households relying on gas for heating will need to maintain a separate supplier for gas services.
Looking Ahead
If Ofgem approves Tesla's application, the company could offer innovative energy solutions tailored to electric vehicle and home battery users. However, the success of this venture will depend on regulatory approvals, market conditions, and Tesla's ability to navigate the competitive energy landscape in the UK. (The Times, The Guardian)
