Could Hotter Summers Increase Demand for Electricians?
The number of UK homes using air conditioning has doubled to more than 4 million in just three years, as rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves change the way people live and work. Recent research found that both portable and fixed cooling systems are becoming increasingly common across the UK.
Experts are warning that the UK’s homes and electrical infrastructure may need significant upgrades in future decades. According to the Climate Change Committee, 92% of existing UK homes could be at risk of overheating by 2050 without adaptation measures.
Recent reporting by The Guardian highlighted the growing demand for domestic cooling systems, with many homeowners now installing fixed air conditioning units as UK summers become hotter and longer.
What Does This Mean for the Electrical Industry?
As cooling systems become more common, electricians are likely to see increased demand for:
Dedicated electrical circuits
Testing and inspection work
Maintenance and fault finding
Smart energy systems
Heat pump installations
Built-in air conditioning systems can draw significant electrical loads, placing extra pressure on older installations that were never designed for widespread cooling systems. This is likely to increase the need for electrical upgrades and inspection work in both domestic and commercial properties.
The UK Parliament’s Heat Resilience and Sustainable Cooling report also warned that electricity demand for cooling is expected to rise considerably as temperatures increase.
Cooling, Energy Demand and Future Skills
Cooling technologies are also becoming increasingly linked with wider low-carbon technologies such as:
Solar PV systems
Battery storage
Smart controls
Air source heat pumps
EV charging infrastructure
Research published in Energy Policy found that cooling already accounts for around 10% of electricity use in UK buildings, despite air conditioning still being relatively uncommon compared with hotter countries.
For trainee electricians studying qualifications such as the City & Guilds 2365 Diplomas, 18th Edition and Inspection & Testing qualifications, understanding changing energy demands and modern electrical systems could become increasingly valuable.
As the UK adapts to hotter summers and rising electricity demand, the need for skilled electrical workers looks set to continue growing across domestic, commercial and infrastructure sectors.
