Could the AI Boom Create a New Generation of High-Paying Electrical Careers?
The global expansion of artificial intelligence could create substantial new opportunities for electricians, according to Jensen Huang, founder and Chief Executive of NVIDIA.
Huang believes the construction of AI data centres, semiconductor factories and supporting energy infrastructure will generate significant demand for skilled tradespeople. Speaking about the scale of the infrastructure required, Huang said:
“If you’re an electrician, you’re a plumber, a carpenter—we’re going to need hundreds of thousands of them to build all of these factories.”
He has also described the coming expansion as a potential boom for skilled trades, telling electricians and plumbers:
“This is your time.”
His comments challenge the widespread assumption that artificial intelligence will benefit only software developers, engineers and technology graduates. Although AI systems rely on advanced processors and software, they cannot operate without physical buildings, electrical distribution systems, cooling equipment, backup power and extensive communications infrastructure.
“Someone must build, install, inspect, test and maintain those systems.”
For qualified electricians, and for people currently considering a career in the electrical industry, the growth of AI infrastructure could therefore create another important area of long-term employment.
AI Does Not Operate in the Cloud Alone
The term “cloud computing” can make artificial intelligence appear almost entirely virtual.
In reality, AI depends on enormous physical data centres containing servers, processors, cooling systems, backup generators, electrical distribution equipment and network infrastructure.
These facilities consume considerable amounts of electricity and require sophisticated systems to distribute power safely and reliably throughout the building.
Electrical work associated with data centres can include:
High-voltage and low-voltage distribution systems
Switchgear and transformer installations
Uninterruptible power supply systems
Standby generators and emergency power
Structured containment and cable-management systems
Earthing and bonding
Fire-alarm and life-safety systems
Lighting and emergency lighting
Inspection, testing and commissioning
Planned maintenance and fault diagnosis
As the number and scale of AI data centres increases, so will the requirement for electricians with recognised qualifications, relevant site experience and strong technical competence.
Skilled Trades Could Be Among the Winners of the AI Boom
In an August 2026 report by Fortune, Jensen Huang argued that the development of AI infrastructure could unlock large numbers of well-paid jobs in electrical work, plumbing and construction.
His prediction is based on the sheer scale of physical infrastructure required.
AI companies need new data centres, semiconductor facilities, energy connections and supporting construction projects. These cannot be delivered by software alone.
Huang has suggested that skilled trade occupations could experience rapid growth as countries invest in this new generation of infrastructure:
“The skilled craft segment of every economy is going to see a boom.”
The six-figure salary examples discussed in American reports relate primarily to the United States and should not be treated as a guarantee of equivalent earnings in the UK.
Nevertheless, Huang’s central point remains highly relevant to the British electrical industry: advanced technology does not eliminate the need for skilled trades. In many cases, it creates additional demand for them.
AI infrastructure cannot expand without suitably trained electricians and other construction professionals.
The UK Is Expanding Its AI Infrastructure
The UK Government has identified data centres and computing capacity as essential infrastructure for the future development of artificial intelligence.
In 2026, the Government reported that five AI Growth Zones had been announced to support the development of localised AI infrastructure across the UK.
Its UK AI Hardware Plan also referred to more than £28 billion of confirmed private investment connected to new AI data-centre capacity.
This expansion is likely to create opportunities across several areas, including:
Electrical installation
Building-services engineering
Power generation and distribution
Cooling and ventilation
Construction management
Network engineering
Commissioning and maintenance
Renewable and low-carbon energy systems
The work will not be limited to constructing new buildings.
Data centres require ongoing inspection, testing, servicing, upgrading and fault resolution throughout their operating life.
For electricians, this means the opportunity may extend far beyond the initial construction phase.
Britain Already Needs More Skilled Electrical Workers
The potential growth of AI infrastructure comes at a time when the UK is already experiencing shortages across electrical installation and other construction trades.
Skills England’s 2026 construction assessment projected that employment across 30 priority construction occupations would need to increase by approximately 493,000 workers between 2025 and 2035 to support housing and infrastructure commitments.
The Government has also announced investment intended to train tens of thousands of additional construction workers, including electricians, engineers, plumbers and carpenters.
Separate plans for clean-energy growth have identified electricians as one of the priority occupations required to deliver the UK’s future energy systems.
This means demand for qualified electricians is being driven by several major developments at the same time:
New homes and commercial buildings
Data centres and AI infrastructure
Renewable-energy installations
Electric-vehicle charging
Battery-storage systems
Building electrification
Energy-efficiency improvements
Upgrades to the national electricity network
The future electrician may therefore work across a much wider range of technologies than previous generations.
Why Data Centres Need Highly Competent Electricians
A data centre cannot simply lose power without serious consequences.
Even a short interruption can affect essential digital services, financial systems, communications and business operations.
For that reason, electrical installations within these environments are designed around reliability, redundancy and resilience.
Data-centre electricians may be required to work with:
Multiple power supplies
Automatic transfer systems
Generator backup
Battery-based uninterruptible power supplies
Large distribution boards and switchgear
Three-phase systems
Power-monitoring equipment
Protective devices and control systems
Critical circuits that cannot easily be isolated
The level of responsibility can be substantial.
Employers and contractors are therefore likely to look for electricians who can demonstrate recognised qualifications, current knowledge of BS 7671, inspection and testing competence, and relevant site experience.
Holding a basic electrical certificate may not be enough to access the most technical or responsible positions.
Which Qualifications Could Help?
There is no single qualification that guarantees a job within a data centre.
Requirements will differ between employers, contractors and specific projects.
However, electricians seeking to work on major commercial or industrial installations will normally benefit from completing a recognised occupational pathway.
City & Guilds Level 2 and Level 3 Electrical Installation Diplomas
For people entering the electrical industry, the City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas provide the technical knowledge and practical foundation needed to begin progressing towards qualified-electrician status.
These qualifications cover areas including electrical science, installation technology, health and safety, fault diagnosis, design principles and practical installation work.
A Level 3 Electrical NVQ
An NVQ allows candidates to demonstrate their occupational competence through evidence gathered from genuine electrical work.
Depending on the candidate’s existing qualifications and experience, the appropriate route could include the standard NVQ pathway or an Experienced Worker Assessment.
AM2 or AM2E Assessment
The AM2 or AM2E is an important practical assessment for electricians progressing towards industry recognition and the ECS Gold Card.
Candidates are assessed on their ability to carry out electrical work safely and competently under controlled assessment conditions.
BS 7671 Wiring Regulations
Electricians must maintain an up-to-date understanding of the requirements contained within BS 7671.
The City & Guilds 2382 qualification is commonly used to demonstrate knowledge of the current Wiring Regulations.
Inspection and Testing
The City & Guilds 2391-52 qualification develops knowledge and competence in initial verification and periodic inspection and testing.
These skills can be especially valuable in environments where reliability, compliance and accurate reporting are critical.
Experience Still Matters
Qualifications are essential, but they form only part of an electrician’s professional development.
Major data-centre projects may also require experience in areas such as:
Commercial or industrial installations
Three-phase systems
Steel-wire-armoured cabling
Containment systems
Distribution equipment
Inspection and testing
Safe isolation
Reading technical drawings
Working under permits and site procedures
Coordinating with other trades
Someone beginning electrical training should not expect to move immediately into a senior data-centre position.
Progression normally requires structured training, workplace experience, recognised qualifications and continued professional development.
However, starting with the correct qualification pathway can create the foundation needed to pursue these opportunities later.
Will AI Replace Electricians?
Artificial intelligence may change the way electricians plan work, diagnose faults, complete paperwork and monitor electrical systems.
Digital tools are already being used to improve design, predictive maintenance, energy management and building automation.
However, electrical installation remains a physical, safety-critical occupation.
Cables still need to be installed. Equipment must still be connected. Circuits must be tested. Faults must be investigated. Installations must comply with technical and legal requirements.
Artificial intelligence may support electricians, but it cannot independently perform the full range of practical tasks required on a live construction site or within an operational data centre.
The more technology society installs, the more infrastructure must be created and maintained to support it.
